Seems like the outdoor industry is booming thanks to Covid. Do you have a sense of whether this is translating into more outdoor job opportunities?
In March, the backcountry skiing business saw a temporary, seemingly industry-wide halt, yet job openings have stayed steady. The Basecamp community encourages job seekers to personalize their resumes for each position and network aggressively. Jobs in digital marketing, web design, e-commerce, graphic design, online community building/events, and other fields are available to backcountry skiers.
What are some of the coolest outdoor job opportunities you’ve seen on the site?
Finding a new job every week is Jenna’s favorite part of her week. She’s crushing on content creation jobs in Colorado, climate change advocacy in DC, and product design jobs for women’s mountain bike gear in Canada this week. She also appreciates the abundance of internships available, which provide entry-level possibilities for students or anyone looking to enter into the field.
What advice do you have for job seekers in the outdoor industry?
Because the outdoor business is SMALL, job openings may not appear on public employment listings before they are filled. Investigate firms that match your abilities and values, and make an effort to make connections with present employees. Request that someone who is familiar with your character or work ethic write a letter on your behalf.
Any differences in job-seeking strategy for the outdoor industry compared to other fields?
The North Face is looking for people that are passionate about preserving and enjoying our natural landscapes. Caleb Fields, the company’s CEO, claims that the outdoor business is value-driven and led by people who are passionate about both maintaining and safeguarding nature. LinkedIn is an excellent platform for showcasing your interests and followings.
How feasible is it to actually maintain a sustainable, decent-paying career in the outdoors?
The Talk Back co-hosts Ali and Jodie O’Mara discuss the wage disparity in the outdoor tourist business. They claim that while there are numerous seasonal jobs that pay well and provide benefits, many others fall short of their expectations.

Communities that need more representation will be given free or heavily subsidized spaces by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Basecamp seeks to support the efforts of great BIPOC, women, disabled, and LGBTQIA+ leaders who are trying to achieve gender parity in the outdoor industry. The organization’s purpose is to improve diversity in the industry’s top leadership positions.
AMC Hut Croo
In the White Mountains, the Appalachian Mountain Club operates eight huts, which are full-service backcountry bunkhouses. Members clean and replenish the huts with supplies, cook and serve meals, give entertainment, and clean up after themselves. The huts are affectionately referred to as “Croo” huts.

Trail Maintainer/Conservation Crew
