Hey, so can you introduce yourself?

I’m Mark, and I work as a Web Developer for a digital marketing firm. When I’m not writing code, I’m a huge music fan who writes/records/produces my own music. I also have my own YouTube channel and run a YouTube channel reviewing technology.

Why did you learn to code?

I did some web development in sixth form and have always had a passion for technology, which led to the idea for a Youth Work app to help youth workers and mentors have great conversations with young people. I learned how to create apps through a Udemy course on iOS development.

How has your life changed since learning to code?

The biggest change for me has been going from working evenings and weekends to working 9 to 5. In terms of pay, I was quite high-up in my previous career, so I took a pay cut to start web developing; however, while pay is important, doing a job I enjoy and being part of a fantastic team is even more so.

What does a typical day as a web developer look like for you?

As a software developer, I spend a lot of time writing code, and my main stack revolves around the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySql, and PHP). We frequently use WordPress because we need to build websites that clients can easily update and manage.

How did you learn coding?

I took a lot of computer-related courses when I was 17 (hardware, computers, and graphics), so I decided to start learning programming when I was 16.

What was the interview process like for your web developer job?

When I was looking for tech jobs, I applied for a lot of them; none of them specifically requested a portfolio, but I made sure it was linked on my CV. The actual coding tasks focused on the frontend, but they also included going over data collections and PHP.

Do you have tips for people who want to learn to code without doing a degree?

To learn to code, you don’t need a degree or an expensive bootcamp; there’s tons of great free stuff on YouTube for learning something new. My two tips are to try to get some real-world experience to stand out from the crowd, and to just try it.
